QTA stands for QuickTime Audio and is Apple's new file format for voice memos. It was introduced at the end of 2024 with iOS 18.2 and has since appeared on newer generations of iPhones, particularly the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max. Depending on the settings, when you make and export a voice recording on these devices, you will not receive an M4A file, but a .QTA file. The new format supports so-called layered recordings. This feature allows you to add a second audio track, e.g. vocals, to an existing recording. In addition, the four microphones in the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max are stored spatially here. The data is stored unprocessed in FOA (First Order Ambisonics) format with the highest sound quality. This RAW data is also particularly well suited for further processing. This is a major advantage for professional recordings such as podcasts or music, as it allows background noise, for example, to be filtered out more effectively afterwards.

The problems with QTA files

Unfortunately, the QTA format is not well supported outside the Apple ecosystem (and older Apple versions, prior to macOS 15.2). Windows systems are also unable to handle this relatively new format without additional software. This means that if you want to send a voice recording via email or WhatsApp, you will need to convert it first.
